version 6.5 (Modified)

Select Log File... / No Log File

4th Dimension's backup utility, 4D Backup, can help prevent any type of problem by enabling you to back up your database. With 4D Backup, you create a backup of your database and a log file that tracks all changes since the last backup. If necessary, you can restore the database to the state it was in before records were deleted, changed, etc.

Note: To use these commands, the 4D Backup plug-in must be installed in 4D Server.

When you choose Select Log File..., if the database has not been backed up after the last modifications made to the data file, the following alert is displayed:

To stop saving data modifications in a log file, select No Log File. For a detailed discussion about the 4D Log files, refer to the 4th Dimension User Reference manual.

Update License

This command displays the Update License dialog box:

Starting from 4D version 6.5, all the serial numbers are managed by 4th Dimension or 4D Server, included for 4D Compiler and 4D Insider numbers. The dialog box shows all the serial numbers entered on the 4D Server machine, as well as the included plug-in names (if any).

The figures displayed on the window's right side indicate the number of clients that can concurrently use a given application or plug-in.

Note: 4D Server (from version 6.5) is provided by default with:

2 4D Client built-in connections,

4D Backup and 4D Internet Commands plug-ins. The number of connections for these plug-ins matches the 4D Client connections.

These connections are available by default, no expansion serial number needs to be entered.

For further information on 4D Server license number system, refer to the 4D Product Line - Installation Guide manual.

Database Properties

This command displays the Database Properties dialog box:

Using the Database Properties dialog box, you can set the general properties of the database (i.e., the TCP Port on which the server database will be published). For a detailed description of the Database Properties dialog box, refer to the 4th Dimension Design Reference manual.

Register as Service (Windows NT only)

Unregister Current Database

Unregister all 4D Server Services

4D Server can be launched as a Windows NT Service.

A Windows NT Service is an executable object that is installed in a registry database maintained by the service control manager. The services database includes information that determines whether each installed service is started on demand or is started automatically when the system starts. The database can also contains logon and security information for a service so that a service can run even though no user is logged on. It also enables system administrators to customize security requirements for each service and thereby control access to the service.

No more than one instance of a service can be running at a time.

When a 4D Server database is registered as a service, it can be launched automatically at system startup and is not shut down when the user terminates the current Windows Log session.

To register a 4D Server database as a Windows NT Service, select Register as Service.

At this point, you can open the Windows NT Services Control Panel and see an entry for your database:

4D Server's Employees database registered as a Windows NT service

Double-click on the entry to display the Service window. You should set the properties for the service as described below:

Warning: Be sure to define a valid Windows NT account in the "Log On As" area. In addition, this user account must have access to a printer, otherwise an error message will be displayed.

Using this window, you can request that the 4D Server's service to be automatically started at system startup.

Note: You can register any number of databases. Each database can be regristed only once.

To unregister your database, select Unregister Current Database from the 4D Server File menu.

To unregister all 4D Server databases at once, select Unregister all 4D Server Services from the 4D Server File menu.

Note: Registering 4D Server as a service is only available on Windows NT. The three menu are disabled on other Windows versions.

You cannot change the service registration status of 4D Server from within 4D Server, if the application has been launched as a service when Windows NT was started. In this case, the three menu items are disabled. To stop the service, use the Windows NT Services Control Panel.

Warning: The full pathname for your database structure file cannot exceed 250 characters.

If you want to shut down the server, follow these steps:

1. Choose the Quit command from the File menu.

The Server Shut Down dialog box is displayed:

2. Enter the number of minutes in which you want the server to shut down or choose the "Wait for all users to disconnect" option.

After you specify the amount of time and close the dialog box, the server will automatically warn the clients that it will be shutting down:

When this message is released on the system, no new client workstations can be connected to the server.
