version 6.0.2

4D Server's password management assigns access privileges to users. The Passwords editor offers all the features of the 4th Dimension Password Access editor, plus an option that allows easy access to a server database.

You can create a path document that enables you to access the database without selecting the network and the zone each time you run it. This path document can be saved with a user's password in the Password Access editor. The path document stores the location of the database.

Setting up a password system is performed in the Design environment on a 4D Client machine,

To create a path file to a database:

1. Choose Passwords from the Tools menu.

The Password Access editor appears.

2. Highlight the name of the user for whom you want to create a path document.

3. Choose Save Path... from the Passwords menu to save the path.

The Path dialog box is displayed.

4. Name the path and click the Save button.

Now the user can double-click on the path document to access the database. 4D Client will automatically find and open the database on the server.

If you choose Save Path Without Password... from the Passwords menu, the path to the database will be saved, but a user must enter a password when trying to run the database.

Note: You can also create a path document using the EDIT ACCESS command. This command is particularly useful with compiled applications.
